Constructing a whole bicycle lane system in Burgas

Municipality of Burgas has the ambition to propose to its citizens and guests a system of bicycle lanes. This year are being created routes with a total length of 60 km.,5 of which are already created. The money for these projects comes from the project ‘Integrated urban transport of Burgas’- ДБФП№ BG161PO001/1.5-01/2010/001, which is made with the financial support of Operative Program ‘Regional Development’ 2007-2013, co-financed from the EU through European fund for Regional Development.

During the previous 3-4 years the Municipality succeeded in constructing with its own resources around ten kilometers of bicycle lanes, but now with the attracted European resource has the opportunity to realize a closed cycle in which the distant neighborhoods are connected to the Central City area and in-between them.

The construction activities for the realization of the bicycle lane network are realized under the board lines of four construction contracts:

- Constructing a bicycle lane network outside of the Bus Rapid Transit line – Stage 1 (in the Central City area and the nearby neighborhoods in Burgas);

- Constructing a bicycle lane network outside the Bus Rapid Transit line – Stage 2 (in the distant neighborhoods from the central part in Burgas);

- Constructing of the Bus Rapid Transit line and the system of bicycle lanes along the route of the bus line, including reconstruction of traffic lights for creating a priority of the buses – LOT 1 (from ‘Slaveikov’ neighborhood to ‘Izgrev’ neighborhood and Central City area);

- Construction the Bus Rapid Transit line and the bicycle lane network along the bus line, including reconstruction of traffic lights for creating a priority of the buses – LOT 2 (‘Pobeda’ neighborhood and ‘Meden Rudnik’ neighborhood);

According to the geography and the building density in some places the bicycle lanes are shared to be used by both cyclists and pedestrians.

Done (but still with no road markings) are the bicycle lanes in the areas by ‘Nikola Petkov’ str. ‘Dimitar Dimov’ str. ‘Izgrev’ neighborhood, as well as ‘Kapitan Petko voivoda’ str. ‘Meden Rudnik’ neighborhood. It is finished the construction of the bicycle lanes along the ‘Idustialna’ str., ‘Vanche Mihailov’ str., ‘Demokracia’ boulevard, from ‘Stefan Stambolov’ boulevard to ‘San Stefano’ boulevard, along ‘Ianko Komitov’ str. in ‘Slaveikov’ neighborhood and along ‘Zahari Stoianov’ boulevard in ‘Meden Rudnik’ neighborhood.  

It is currently working for finishing the construction of the bicycle lanes along the Bus Rapid Transit line along the ‘Vustanicheska’ str. in ‘Meden Rudnik’ neighborhood and along ‘Stefan Stambolov’ str. – from ‘Prof. Iakim Iakimov’ boulevard to ‘Trakia’ boulevard. At the moment are going active construction activities in the areas along ‘Chataldzja’ str. and ‘Zahari Stoianov’ boulevard.

Construction activities are on turn for the bicycle lanes on ‘Transportna’ str. and ‘Maria Luiza’ boulevard.

The connection of the bicycle lane network in ‘Meden Rudnik’ neighborhood with that at the Central City area is going to be made at rehabilitated bicycle lane on ‘Zahari Stoianov’ str. near the hypermarket ‘Mr. Bricolage’, through South junction.   

On stage public procurement is the construction of bicycle lane network outside the trace of the Bus Rapid transit line – in the range of the distant neighborhoods ‘Sarafovo’, ‘Vetren’, ‘Banevo’, ‘Mineralni bani’ and Kraimorie.
